Anyone who has ever uploaded a video on Twitter has probably been frustrated by its quality Twitter. And if you are one of the people who never uploaded a video themself, you must have seen people talking about it. It’s very common that when a video is uploaded the quality of it gets worse. This is not just an issue with tweets, even when Twitter Fleets existed (RIP) the same used to happen to them as well. This happens because of Twitter’s compression algorithm. And as you can tell, it is quite strict with its compression. It is also official from the company so there are no exceptions or ways around it.

Slow internet connection becomes a problem for the people watching the videos. If the person using Twitter doesn’t have a stable or fast internet connection the videos will play in lower quality. It is similar to the Auto Resolution feature on YouTube. Slow internet means bad video quality. Good internet means good video quality. So even if the video is uploaded in the highest resolution, the quality will depend on the user’s internet bandwidth.

This ‘strictness’ is not entirely unwarranted. People who made the algorithm understood that not everyone has a great internet connection. Since 80% of Twitter users use their phones to access the app, they must also use it while being outside of their homes. While traveling, eating out, in public places, at coffee shops, etc., they can’t have access to the best internet connection all the time. That is why it reduces the quality of the videos so people can watch the videos without any buffering. Think about it, would you rather watch a high-quality video with buffering or a low-quality one without any interruption?

Ways to upload high quality videos on Twitter

You can improve twitter video quality by turning off data saver mode, using mp4 format, uploading in recommended resolution, and aspect ratio.

  1. There is an option in your app settings where it reduces the data usage of your internet. This enables Twitter to run videos in low quality to save your device’s internet usage. You can turn off this “Data Saver” option from your settings.
  2. Another way to make sure that Twitter doesn’t mess with the quality of your video is to use the format that is recommended i.e., MP4. Doing so will ensure that it doesn’t make any changes to the video.
  3. You should also be careful while optimizing or editing the video. Use proper tools that don’t alter the videos.
  4. Optimizing the video to the right resolution and aspect ratio is the smart thing to do. Because when the Twitter video compression algorithm does it, the changes are drastic.

Another thing to keep in mind is to check the video that you are going to upload, the final file that is ready to upload. This is just a precautionary measure because sometimes the files can get corrupted or the videos can get blurry during the export from the video editor to your computer or mobile phone.
